The Brief

Award-winning conversion of the Grade II Listed GWR Infant School, Great Western One and former Mill Building involving extensive engagement with UTC sponsors Oxford Brooks University and Johnson Matthey, along with Swindon Borough Council, English Heritage and the local community.

Concept

Our concept for this STEM college for 600 students aged 14-19, celebrates the link between ‘historic’ engineering and ‘engineering the future’.

Our key challenge was creating innovative, inspirational facilities, whilst also protecting and enhancing the retained buildings and structures which are part of the historic Swindon Railway Village.

Features

A central, new-build element connects the existing buildings and takes inspiration from the former Smithy. Glass and weathering steel distinguish this from the stone-built, historic structures.

This BREEAM ‘Very Good’ development incorporates low and zero carbon technologies and was designed to facilitate the addition of a demonstration fuel cell.

“Scott Brownrigg worked tirelessly to accommodate our requirements: they were excellent listeners and consulted on everything. Their capacity to meet deadlines and demands was unbounded, a commitment which did not diminish once their main contracting construction company had progressed to SPM phase. It was also noticeable during the entire process how well they worked as a whole team alongside the contractors and their other partners.”
